On May 16/17, the Immanuel Lutheran Palatine Bobcats Track and Field team competed in the Lutheran State Championship held at Concordia University Chicago in River Forest. Just to participate in the state meet, athletes are required to meet rigorous qualifying times and distances in their individual events. Seven Bobcat athletes not only met but exceeded these standards in order to become eligible participants. They are 8th Graders John Kalopisis (110m hurdles), Wesley Hunter (200m & 4×200 relay), Rood Pierre (100m, 200m, 4×200 relay, and high jump), Samantha Ennis (shot put & discus), Julia LaValle (1600m), and 7th Graders Caleb Engelmann (110m hurdles & 4×200 relay) and Jacob Hunter (200m, 110m hurdles, and 4×200 relay).
Both Bobcat boys’ and girls’ teams experienced successes at the preliminaries and semifinals on Saturday with the boys progressing on to the finals Sunday afternoon in the 100m, 200m, and 4x200m relay. 8th Grader Samantha Ennis placed 1st in the shot put by smashing the standing state record of 33’10” set in 2007 with a throw of 35’.00.50”. She also had a respectable 4th place finish in the discus throw in which the top 4 competitors were only separated by a matter of inches. Although the athletes gave everything they had, competition was tough and they were outrun in races separated only by seconds.
Coach Jean Link stated, “The Bobcats worked extremely hard this season despite many challenges with scheduling and weather related cancellations. It is a testament to their hearts and strong work ethic that they were able to achieve the level of success that they did this season. I am extremely proud of the entire team. This year was a learning experience for all of us, myself included and we will come away from this season stronger and more resilient than ever.”
