The Lutheran Honors Band is a one day festival that brings together the top musicians in our Illinois Lutheran middle school and junior high bands. This year we had 20 schools represented. Students are nominated by their directors, and chosen based on their credentials and the band’s instrumentation needs. They prepare music in advance that is rehearsed with the group and guest director on the day of the festival, and present an evening concert for families and friends. It is an opportunity to share their musical gifts with others, and experience a large ensemble and challenging literature.
This year was the 14th annual year of LHB hosted by Concordia Lutheran School, in Peoria, IL. Immanuel has been a part of the LHB since it’s beginning. This year we were excited to bring three 8th graders and one 7th grader playing the oboe, percussion, alto saxophone and french horn. They participated in the full day event of rehearsals, sectionals, ending with a fantastic concert of difficult music!
We are pleased to announce that we are in the process of commissioning a new band work to celebrate the 15th anniversary festival by composer Todd Statler a composer with Alfred Music Publishing. His piece will feature music of our Lutheran hymnody. It will be a world premiere at the Lutheran Honors Band Festival which will take place at CLS, Peoria, IL on Friday, March 23, 2018.
