This weekend, I had the joy of cheering for our varsity girls at the Lutheran Sports Association of Illinois State basketball tournament. My pride in the girls was not found in their final achievement, winning the tournament, but in their growth as a team through their hard work this season. Coach Heather shared with me that they focused on three goals all season long – Trusting God, Working Together as a Team, and Trying your Hardest.
What a great lesson for all of us! We can Trust God because He loves us, cares for us, and provides for us. His plan for us is perfect, we just need to trust Him enough to follow Him. Teamwork enables us to be more effective. Our teammates help by shouldering burdens, sharing the work load, and supporting our efforts. Being a part of a team is a give and take - we are expected to be there for our teammates, not just take from them. Being part of team also means that we are aware of others, not being focused on ourselves. Trying our Hardest can also be stated as ‘Giving our Best’. Whatever we do, we should do to the best of our ability. Our ‘try’ may not be perfect, but we grow when we try to the best of our ability. So many sell short their own potential when they fear trying something new or hesitate to risk because the result may not be successful.
Only 18 middle school girls were on that Immanuel basketball team that won the State Championship, but I think the rest of us can learn from their team goals – Trust God, Work Together, and Try our Hardest! Congratulations Lady Bobcats and good luck at Nationals!
